BPL is seeking a School Outreach librarian to provide outreach services to the school community in Brooklyn. The successful candidate for this position will work to strengthen the Library’s connection to students, parents, teachers and administration at the elementary, middle and high school level. They will collaborate with colleagues to identify the needs of each school and develop programs and services accordingly. This position requires professional knowledge and judgment; including, but not limited to, knowledge about library services and resources, familiarity with the Library’s print and electronic resource collections, readers’ advisory services, and reference services. The successful candidate will also possess strong ability in and comfort with public speaking and developing and leading trainings and workshops. Staff at this level report to the Coordinator of School Outreach and other assigned supervisors.

  • Visit Brooklyn schools to support faculty, students, and parents in use of Library resources
  • Support the MyLibraryNYC initiative and provide outreach services to partner schools
  • Help Brooklyn schools connect with their local BPL branch and foster collaboration
  • Participate in general outreach and community events
  • Train, mentor and support BPL branch librarians in successfully partnering with schools
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited library school; Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate issued by the State of New York, required
  • Basic understanding of current and emerging library technology, trends, and public library issues
  • 2-3 years’ experience working with the public and diverse communities preferred
  • Ability to travel to BPL branches and offsite locations and to work some evenings and weekends
  • Strong presentation, teaching, and programming skills; ability to be flexible and adaptable
  • Familiarity with the NYC public school environment is highly desirable
  • Excellent communication skills; commitment to customer service
  • Background in early childhood and/or special education a plus
  • Bilingual skills a plus

This position is a union position, represented by District Council 37. The salary for this position is $66,191.
